Four Chase County art galleries will host opening receptions for a series of new contemporary art shows from 2:00-5:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 8. The public is invited to come and meet the artists.
José Alvarado in The Bank, Matfield Green
In The Bank art space in Matfield Green, José Alvarado will show ‘Lines and Gestures.’” Alvarado abandoned a career in engineering to pursue his passion for art. “I wanted to branch out my artistic abilities outside the confines of physics and mathematics.” Alvarado says, “I realized that art contains no boundaries. As much as I enjoyed engineering, my passion of art took precedence.” Informed by his work in the field of aviation, Alvarado’s work is deeply layered, three-dimensional and, indeed, almost aerodynamic.
Kevin Mullins in the Symphony Gallery, Cottonwood Falls
The Symphony in the Flint Hills Gallery in Cottonwood Falls will show the work of Wichita-based painter and printmaker Kevin Mullins, whose unique application of repetition and color instill a sense of rich comfort, measureless depth, and dreamy translucency. Mullins studied art all over the world before settling in Wichita, where he worked as a curator at the Ulrich Museum of Art for fifteen years while maintaining an active studio practice. Mullins’ dedication to his repetitive art has been called “almost ritualistic”; this is a reflection of his life, in which meditation plays an important role.
Justin Marable in The Gallery at Pioneer Bluffs, Matfield Green
Justin Marable (Topeka) has grown to love the subtleties of Kansas geography, its depth of history, and unique culture often hidden within the rolling hills, creek-side timber, and slightly-tilted flatlands. “The longer I learn and grow within the Midwest, the more I realize these slight shifts across the landscape. I often focus on the more colorful and dramatic skyward shifts over Kansas.” Marable’s work presents a depth of beauty to be discovered by those seeking and seeing more of Kansas than meets the eye. His show in The Gallery at Pioneer Bluffs reflects his explorations of the Heartland.
John Scott Anderson in The Gallery at Pioneer Bluffs, Matfield Green
Jon Scott Anderson uses art photography to explore the textures of nature. Each image or page in the “books” builds a narrative that shares the defining characteristics of Classical Chinese poetry, graphic form and empty grammar. His work is informed by his background in painting and filmmaking. Anderson has exhibited his films, videos and photography internationally with one-person shows in New York City, Kansas City and Tokyo. His photos can be found in many corporate and private collections.
