Rita grew up on a farm in the southwestern corner of Chase County. She has memories of walking to the one-room school near her home. Rita graduated from the Wichita Business College and lived in Marion County working as a teller at the Burns State Bank in Marion County. Rita raised her family near Marion, Kansas while her husband John worked in the ranching industry. As Rita’s children entered school, she went back into the business of counting money and keeping books. Rita worked in Elmdale, Kansas at the grain elevator and People’s Exchange Bank. Her working career continued at Cottonwood Valley Bank in Strong City and Exchange National Bank in Cottonwood Falls.
In 2005, Rita was a volunteer with Symphony in the Flint Hills in the cookie and water tent, making her famous, and each year, she returns to this post at the Signature Event. She was hired as the bookkeeper at SFH in 2006 and keeps the organization in a semblance of order on a day-to-day basis. Rita and John live on a ranch just outside of Cottonwood Falls and are active with their church family where she serves on the Finance Committee. Rita loves road trips and when possible, spends time in a warmer climate during the Kansas winter. She and John enjoy traveling to see family and friends. They follow their five grandchildren with school activities and sporting events.
